February 12, 2018 - Learning

Starlings were ganging up on my friend's suet feeder cage, so she thought of ordering a cover for it to discourage them. The helpful person at the Bird Store, suggested turning the suet cage in an upside down position, while leaving the plastic covering on the top and sides.   We were both thrilled to learn about this, and proceeded to try it out.  There have been no more starling problems in my friend's yard, and it didn't take long for the small birds in my yard to catch on, or up.  They often feed like this, anyway. We can call this a valuable learning experience :)  The added bonus, is that the plastic still attached to the top and sides acts as rain protection.

I have hitched my cage to a branch, temporarily with bungee cords.  I love bungee cords ... they are so versatile.

February 9, 2018 - Cold

At the moment it is 7C outside, and we have enjoyed some sunshine mixed with clouds today.  This photo was taken from my front door step, out towards the mountains.  I was hoping to see more snow to show how cold it would be at the top, but the image looks pretty cold to me, just the same.

February 8, 2018 - Talent

I suppose one of my favorite talents is to create - which most often includes making a mess!  Lately I have been creating books or journals.  The book in the images below, is made by cutting up small rectangular pieces of cardboard, overlapping them and sticking them onto bookboard.  I aged the pieces by using inks in an attempt to create a 'leather' look. I added pieces of chipboard shapes, clocks, gears, etc., used a piece of gyproc fibre tape as a stencil for making grid marks, and highlighted the raised edges with a black inkpad.

For the inside, I used cardboard gear shapes as stencils, and inked them with a 'vintage photo'or 'walnut' distress ink pad to create a design on some of the pages.  After I made three signatures of the groups of papers, I sewed them together with a five-hole pamphlet stitch.  I then attached them all to the inside of the covers, and ... made a book.

I took an image of some old geranium leaves caught during the golden hour.  It was lovely to see the sun after a rainy night and foggy morning. 

Although the colour of the Winter Jasmine flowers resembles that of daffodils, Wordsworth did describe them as a host of golden daffodils, so here's a section of a host of golden Winter Jasmine :)

Did you know that each cardboard toilet roll tube has a long number inside?  The one in this photo, as far as I can make out, is :  H 212: 17 252 00:47

I have read that there are companies now that are making TP without the cardboard tube.

Also an excerpt from the same article states that Scott Paper Co. was the first to insert a cardboard tube into the roll in 1890. 

After 128 years, going tubeless!
